The fifth generation classic, known informally as the iPod video, featured a 2.5" 320x240 QVGA screen and a smaller Click Wheel. The fifth generation iPod is the first classic iPod to be available in an alternative color scheme in a non-special edition form, as a black option was added alongside "Signature iPod White", and marked the second full redesign of the iPod's aesthetic with its re-arranged proportions, its return to a fully flat front plate, and its more rounded rear casing. The 4-pin remote port was removed as well, causing backwards accessory compatibility issues.

I still use my fifth generation iPod and apart from the occasional restoration its been great. I really like being able to have most of my music library with me and the navigation and ease of use is brilliant.
I’ve watched the odd episode on it here and there but the screen is simply too small to enjoy anything. I have a FM transmitter for my car too which is great for long distance driving.

This ipod, in my opinion was the worst built one. They are prone to breaking and I have had 3 now and they have all broken for different reasons. My friends have also broken.. I have a 4th Generation and a 2nd Generation, aswell as ipod touch, iphone, all ipod nanos all shuffles.. so I think I have had my worst track record with this one.

I bought this iPod in late January 2006, it was my third iPod and to date has been the best I have had.
I previous had a 3rd Gen and a iPod photo.
I still have this iPod and just handed it down to my wife as I just got a iPod classic. It froze up a few times and I had to restore it a few times but much less than the previous iPods i had.

Me and the wife have been ipod fans ever since 2004. Even though today we own 2 iphones, 1 ipod classic, and apple tv; I still to this day continue to use my 5th gen. Aside from the occasional reseting, its still kicking, and will be used till its death.

mine drowned. but i’ve been really careful with mine, for a year and a half of having it it hasn’t gotten a lot of scratches, maybe a few here and there. but yeah. it’s a really good ipod.

in my opinion, the best looking ipod ever created, i like the new aluminum look of the macs and nano, but the classic really looks ugly compared to this.

In my opinion, best one so far. We’ve been iPod fans since 2001 and have owned every single one and this one I have purchased refurbished and has caused no problems. I have used and abused it, as I have taken it on all my business trips, to Amsterdam, Ireland 5 times, Israel twice, to France (Paris and the 3 hour TGV ride to Lannion and back while navigating Paris’ underground tangle of a subway system) and countless trips to Texas, Washington, Nebraska, not to mention countless hours this thing has kept me company on the airplane. I prefer to use my trusty iPod instead of the IFE systems on aircraft. When I’m not traveling, this thing is stuck in my car (I outfitted my Mazda6 with a adaptor) and I leave it in there. 90% of the time my car is parked in the sun. All this abuse and this thing just won’t die! Sincerely, happy iPod Fan!

I love this iPod. Although mine dies really fast, but thats probably due to the fact that i havent gotten the battery changed since the day i got it
. I think this is the best generation of iPods. It has a lot of storage capacity but not too much, and it is durable. Mine has taken hundreds of falls into the concrete and the most damage its taken is having a very small piece of the plating chipped off one of the corners. I love it!!!

I bought a 5th generation in November 05, my first and only ipod. It hasn’t missed a beat in all that time – the battery still lasts and I’ve only just filled its 30G capacity (due mostly to good musical weeding I guess). The only problem that I have with it is during winter. Over night the temperature drops and the battery doesn’t like it. I have to put the ipod next to the heater while I have my breakfast so it’s good for the train commute each morning.
I’ll only update this ipod when it dies or the iphone becomes affordable in Japan!

I have had this iPod for at least 3 years now, and nothing has gone wrong. I have more than 2000 songs on it and at least 5 movies. I have a ton of music videos on it as well. I have dropped it a million times and I believe I have spilled water on it before, and yet the only thing that happened is a few scratches on the back. Sometimes I notice that it’s battery actually goes up if I leave it off while listening (switch the top to “Hold” while listening. It saves quite a bit of battery.) to it. This has been convenient since I don’t charge my iPod very often.
My family has been through 4 iPods other than this one, the iPod Mini, the iPod Nano, another iPod Nano, and an iPod Touch, yet this one is the only one that has lasted for 3 years.

I have had my 5G iPod since new 3 or 4 Years use every day and it looks like it but functions flawless. I value it as much as my hammer. One wish I could find a product that I saw on youtube called iaPeel its a covering that looks very durable and you can print your own graphics on it on your printer at home. Does anybody have a clue where to buy it?

Funny dorky story. I had a fourth generation iPod in late January 2005 as a gift from my mom for my birthday. It was my first iPod and I loved it.
Well around March 2006, I lost (or it was stolen) the iPod and was heartbroken, especially because I was going on Spring Break and wanted something to listen to on the plane. So my Dad went and purchased me a Fifth Gen iPod, know the first one was a gift, he got the new one inscribed: “To Ashley, Luv Mom. Happy Birthday 02-14-05.”
So now when people see my iPod and say, oh wow, I guess I know how long you’ve had this…I explain how misleading it is because the 5th gens didn’t come out until October 05.
I know, lol, corny.
fishyer on September 27th, 2009 at 8:03 pm says:
I think it is the best because its a perfect moveable library
I use it all the time with my speakers and on the move
u cant run with it but its perfect for an easily portable cheap ipod, so much better than the older ones
Dont use video, dont use photo’s those features eem pointless

I had this one (30 GB) since March 2006. It worked great. But the buttery life was much shorter than 14 hours. Once i let it just play continously and it was dead after 8,5 hours aprox. Now i sold it and bought myself a 120 GB clasic from 2008. This one is much better about the battery life.

i kinda like the look and feel to the fifth generation better than that of the new ipod classics, but that’s just me. this was my first ipod ever and i had for well around 3 years before it got stolen. it had only frozen on me twice previously but after i restored it, it worked fine…i was really sceptical about getting the classic but i figured it would work out.

This ipod has been great! I have had mine for 5 years with no problems. I have had over 2 thousand songs with movies off and on. Just recently in the last 6 months, the battery wont last a full day, so im planning on upgrading.

Amazing. Kudos to Apple support. My trusty 30G 5th gen had suffered the ‘no-audio-issue-but-if-you-squish-the-bottom-right-hand-corner-hard-enough-the-sound-might-come-back-on’ syndrome. So I just left my 5th gen lying around for about a year until someone stole my iTouch, I tried to resurrect my 5th gen again. To my surprise, the issue I mentioned above was a known manufacturing defect on these models. I called Apple support, mentioned the words ‘Warranty Exception’ and the ‘no-audio’ defect, 20 minutes later they agreed to fix it at no charge. regardless that it was 3 years out of warranty. They didn’t end up fixing it though, they sent me a ‘new’ refurbished 5th gen 30G iPod, with a new case and battery even! I f***in love Apple support. They’ve won me over as a life-long customer. You pay a premium for Apple products, but as the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for. . .”
